Motivational Interviewing for SUD Counseling
This skills-focused course introduces current Motivational Interviewing practice for substance use disorder counseling. It emphasizes collaboration, autonomy support, reflective listening, change talk, sustain talk, and movement toward client-owned plans without relying on confrontation, persuasion, or the fixing reflex.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Learning objectives
- Describe the purpose of Motivational Interviewing and distinguish MI from persuasion, confrontation, advice-giving, and passive listening.
- Apply the current MI spirit of partnership, acceptance, compassion, and empowerment in SUD counseling interactions.
- Use the four MI tasks—engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning—to organize a change conversation.
- Use OARS skills—open questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries—with greater intentionality.
- Recognize preparatory and mobilizing change talk and respond in ways that strengthen client language for change.
- Respond to sustain talk and discord without arguing, labeling, shaming, or triggering the fixing reflex.
- Use Ask-Offer-Ask, importance and confidence questions, and planning strategies while protecting client autonomy.

A minimum score of 80%—12 of 15 correct—is required.
Learner feedback is required before the completion workflow can advance.

When production launch controls are authorized, certificate eligibility will require completion of all modules, all required application checks, a passing final-exam score, the course evaluation, and the learner attestation.
