COURSE OVERVIEW
Working With Veterans in SUD Treatment
A practical, Veteran-informed continuing education course for SUD counselors. The course focuses on military cultural awareness, treatment engagement, trauma-sensitive practice, co-occurring PTSD/SUD coordination, pain and opioid safety, military sexual trauma awareness, moral injury, suicide and overdose risk, recovery capital, and effective connection with VA and community resources.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Learning objectives
- Describe how military culture and Veteran identity may influence SUD treatment without stereotyping the individual.
- Ask about military service and its treatment relevance using respectful, clinically purposeful questions.
- Recognize how PTSD symptoms, MST, moral injury, pain, TBI, sleep problems, and transition stress may interact with substance use and treatment participation.
- Use Veteran-informed MI, shared decision-making, group facilitation, and recovery planning while maintaining SUD counseling scope.
- Coordinate evidence-based care for co-occurring conditions, medications for SUD, pain, overdose risk, and suicide risk.
- Identify Veteran-specific and community recovery resources, including VA, Vet Centers, peer supports, and crisis services.

A minimum score of 80%—12 of 15 correct—is required.

The learner must electronically attest that they personally completed the required course activities and assessments.

The cumulative final contains 15 scored questions. The passing standard is 80% (12/15).

CERTIFICATE & PROVIDER STATUS
Certificate release remains disabled
When production launch controls are authorized, certificate eligibility will require completion of all modules, all required application checks, a passing final-exam score, the course evaluation, and the learner attestation.
